Head protection is a very serious matter, and there
are regulations and standards that you need to
be aware of, including:
EN 397
This is a European standard which specifies
the requirements which need to be met
for safety hats to be recognised as fit
for purpose. It requires that all helmets
should include vertical shock absorption,
penetration resistance, flame resistance,
and have a chin strap attachment that
releases at a maximum of 250N of force.
Personal Protection Equipment
Regulations (2002)
According to these regulations, employers
must provide workers with all necessary
PPE equipment free of charge, as well
as ensuring that it is properly stored,
maintained and fit for purpose. Employees
must also be trained on how to use
equipment such as hard hats properly

IN THIS SECTION:
to ensure they’re used as effectively

EN 12492: 2012
Safety Helmets for Climbing
Main differences between EN397 and
EN12492 are:
• EN 397 – Chinstrap designed to release
after 250N force – Helmet impact
tested on crown
• EN 12492 – Chinstrap designed to be
permanently fixed to ensure helmet
stays on the head in the event of a fall –
Helmet impact tested on crown, front,
side, and rear
EN50365: 2002: Electrical insulation
test for low voltage electricity 1000VAC
or 1500VDC
EN 397: 2012
